BZH Appraisal Associates is built on a legacy of family, expertise, community, and trust.
Our story begins with Mayer Horowitz, born in 1926 in Chrzanów, Poland. A Holocaust survivor, Mayer came to the United States in 1948 and, with the support of the Bobover Rebbe, Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam, began rebuilding his life with faith, resilience, and determination. A watchmaker, antiques dealer, and artist, Mayer had a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, history, and value. In 1984, he founded the appraisal business that would become BZH Appraisal Associates, serving as its founding president and establishing the principles that continue to guide the firm today: honesty, transparency, professionalism, and trust.
Ben Horowitz, Mayer’s son, led the firm for close to forty years. He built BZH’s Judaica and Hebraica specialty from the ground up, developing the scholarly relationships, market knowledge, and professional standards that remain central to the firm today. Under his leadership, BZH grew into a premier appraisal firm based in New York City, trusted for its discretion, integrity, and expertise across Judaica, Hebraica, antiques, decorative arts, collectibles, and objects of historic and cultural significance.
Yoseph Horowitz, Ben’s son, joined the firm in 2009, continuing the family tradition into its third generation. In 2021, he became principal appraiser and president of BZH Appraisal Associates. Yoseph established the firm’s fine art specialty, broadening its work across painting, sculpture, and decorative art while continuing the standards his father and grandfather set.
Today, BZH Appraisal Associates remains a family firm built on relationships, discretion, integrity, and professional excellence. Every appraisal is approached with care, clarity, and respect for the object, for its history, and for the client who entrusts it to us.
