Frequently Asked Questions

Find detailed information regarding our appraisal standards, process, and professional compliance below.

What types of property do you appraise?

We specialize in the valuation of fine art, rare books and manuscripts, luxury jewelry, silver, watches, and decorative art for collections ranging from individual items to vast estates.

How does the appraisal process work?

The process begins with an initial inquiry and scope definition, followed by an onsite inspection or photo review, comprehensive market research, and the delivery of a USPAP-compliant final report.

How are your fees structured?

Fees are set on an hourly or project-based rate, ensuring transparency. Time is calculated for on-site inspection, research, analysis, market comparisons, and preparation of the final written report. An initial estimate of projected time is provided at the start of each engagement, and an itemized invoice is issued upon completion. All fees are independent and fully compliant with USPAP and professional appraisal standards.

In certain cases, a flat fee for the entire appraisal project may be arranged following a review of the scope of work. This option provides a clear, upfront cost and is determined based on the complexity, duration, and specific requirements of the assignment. If the scope of work changes, you will be promptly notified and provided with a revised estimate reflecting any additional items or research required.

Do you travel or work from photographs?

While onsite inspections are preferred for accuracy, we offer remote appraisals from high-resolution photographs for certain items or when logistical constraints apply.

Is my information confidential?

Confidentiality and discretion are the foundation of our business. As set out in the Appraisers Association of America’s Ethics rules, it is our duty to keep all appraisals confidential. No information will ever be shared with third parties without express permission.

What is USPAP?

The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is the generally recognized ethical and performance standards for the appraisal profession in the United States. USPAP was adopted by Congress in 1989, and contains standards for all types of appraisal services, including real estate, personal property, business and mass appraisal. Compliance is required for state-licensed and state-certified appraisers involved in federally-related real estate transactions. USPAP is updated every two years so that appraisers have the information they need to deliver unbiased and thoughtful opinions of value.

At BZH Appraisals Associates, all written reports conform to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice of the Appraisal Foundation (USPAP), the Code of Ethics of the Appraisers Association of America (AAA) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations. All appraisers have taken and passed the USPAP exam. All reports are confidential and are not released to any party without the permission of the client.

Do you buy and sell artworks?

In order to provide independent and conflict-free valuations, BZH Appraisal Associates does not buy, sell, or broker any works of art that we appraise.

When is a professional appraisal necessary?

Appraisals are typically required for insurance coverage, estate tax planning, charitable donations, sales advisory, divorce proceedings, and equitable distribution.

What information should I prepare?

Clients should provide any available documentation, including previous appraisals, sales receipts, diamond grading reports, provenance records, exhibition history, or certificates of authenticity.

How long does an appraisal take?

The timeline varies depending on the size and complexity of the collection. Standard reports are typically delivered within one to three weeks following the inspection.

Are your reports accepted by insurers, courts, and the IRS?

Yes. Our reports are prepared in strict accordance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice standards (USPAP) and are widely accepted by insurance companies, federal courts, and the IRS.

Do you authenticate works of art?

Appraisers do not authenticate works of art. We do, however, perform due diligence by reviewing paperwork, provenance, referencing exhibition catalogues and catalogues raisonné that aid in authentication. Additionally, we can facilitate the authentication process by coordinating with the appropriate specialist, foundation, or committee.
